Prof. Xiangsheng Chen

Biography:

Prof. Xiangsheng Chen is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering. Prof. Xiangsheng Chen is a Chinese engineer and a famous expert in the fields of tunnel and underground construction, urban rail transit engineering, special geotechnical construction, and well construction. He is a recipient of the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, China, and a leading talent of Shenzhen. In 1978, he entered Huainan Institute of Mining (now Anhui University of Science and Technology), majoring in well construction. In 1986, he was a visiting scholar at the Technical University of Berlin, where he studied tunnel engineering under the guidance of Prof. Eischmir. He continued his career at Ruhr-University Bochu, and focused on the research of artificial frozen soil under the instruction of Prof. H.L. Jessberger. In 1991, he studied English at Shanghai International Studies University before serving as By-Fellow Professor at the University of Cambridge. He continued his research there on soil engineering in cold regions, with guidance from Prof. Andrew N. Schofield, Previous President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). He also received his Doctor of Engineering degree from Tsinghua University.

 

He returned to China in February 1994 and continued to work as deputy director and later director at the Beijing Mine Research Institute, and Coal Research Institute. In February 2001, he was recruited by Shenzhen Metro Company Co., Ltd and worked there for seven years. In March 2018, he was hired by Shenzhen University as a professor and dean of the College of Civil and Transportation Engineering.

 

Over the past 40 years, Chen has completed more than 60 research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the National Programs for Science and Technology Development. He also presided over more than 60 major projects at the national or provincial level, with a total investment of more than 167 billion yuan. His previous honors include three National Science and Technology Progress Awards; 14 awards at the provincial and ministerial level; four China Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Awards; one Mao Yisheng Railway Engineer Award; and one Entrepreneurship Award in Science and Technology. He has published nine monographs, five of which were authored by him, and delivered over 100 papers at home and abroad.
